How To Benefit From Chakra Therapy
By Jayne Tamzin
The chakras are "energy wheels" that are lined
up along the center line, or meridian, of a person's body according to
ancient Vedic thought. There are seven of these wheels (although a few
more mystical practitioners say there are 14), beginning at the lowest
base of the body (thought of as either the base of the spine or the
genitals) and extending in their order to a person's "crown" (tippy
top of the head).
In between there are: the orange chakra of the
womb or belly; the golden chakra of the solar plexus; the green chakra
of the heart; the blue chakra of the throat; and the indigo chakra of
the "third eye", or the center of the forehead. The basal chakra is
red, and the crown chakra is violet right above the head but as its
circumference extends outward, away from the head, it turns whiter.
In addition to being associated with colors
(wavelengths of light), the chakras are numbered in order one through
seven, with the basal chakra being "number one".
The first chakra controls our physical health
and vitality and our sexual health. The second chakra commands our
creative powers. The third commands the power of our will and desires.
The fourth chakra commands the energy of our emotional life and opens
us up to giving and receiving love. The fifth chakra gives us
communicative power, loops our emotions in with our thinking, and
gives us personal magnetism. The sixth chakra commands intuition and
psychic powers and insights, (hence the "sixth sense"). And the
seventh chakra is used to take us on "astral voyages" and connects us
with cosmic awareness, some of which is what is captured and brought
back down to the second chakra during artistic practices and which is
also accessed on shamanic journeys. When people feel they are
connecting directly with God, they are focusing the energies of their
seventh, purple-white, crown chakra.
The chakra wheels naturally want to spin. If
they are healthy and "clean", they are spinning, and then they are
providing you with the strongest, healthiest energies you can have.
But if they become clogged, then they cannot spin and you will have
problems or sickness in one or more of the areas outlined.
No chakra should be more developed than the
others, either. If this happens then addictions, neuroses,
obsessive-compulsive disorders, or unintentional cruelty will result.
The chakras can become dirty and clogged through
neglect or wrong living. If you eat a poor diet or have a negative or
shallow attitude toward sexual relations, you will sully the first,
red, basal chakra, and as a result you will suffer from ill health, or
broken romantic relationships, or sexually transmitted diseases. If
you constantly think about dark things like working black magic
against people, you'll clog up the seventh, purple-white, crown chakra
and cut off your access to the cosmic or the divine, leaving you
feeling bitter, fearful, and empty.
One of the most important aspects of a healthy,
rapidly spinning chakra wheel is its flexibility; that is, it can open
to receive energy from something good but close to repel energy from
something bad. A mind is just like a hand: if it cannot both open and
close then it's broken. And a chakra is just like a mind--if it is
healthy then it can both open and close as need be.
The way to use chakra therapy is to focus in a
balanced way on each one of the seven major energy categories that
each chakra commands. This should be done on a daily basis. Take each
major energy category and at some point each day meditate upon how its
aspects are manifesting--or not manifesting--in your life, and as you
do this visualize your body's energy residing in that particular
chakra. If you find your energy waning in any category, meditate on
the steps you can take to make that category healthy and cleanse the
related chakra.
Some people find that meditating on a gem stone
the same color as the chakra wheel allows them to get a clear image in
their mind of what actions they need to take to make it healthier.
